for an amateur just getting into this...what sort of material would you use for a replacement popper? The one that came with the whip has worn out to the point of being positively flaccid.

Mason twine and parachute cord seem highly recommended but I'm double-checking.
I personally use the polypropylene string that is used to bound together hay bales. It is a tough material that is stiff enough it doesn't knot itself.
polypropylene string, then?
Is there a specific type I should be looking for?
I googled it and there's a few types.
None that I know of. Mine in specific is a kind of salmon color, if types are decided by color

I knew a whip was capable of breaking small bones, branches and such, and I finally had the chance to test it out. I used a 5 foot bull to break a 1 inch thick pine board, as part of a TKD test. One of the judges got a video of it (I'm still waiting to get a copy). Just like any martial arts board break the key is where you aim.
What caused it to be able to do that? The weight?
It has more to do with the acceleration and speed of the whip end
